Top 10 Slowest American Cars of the 1980s
In this week’s episode, I count down the top ten slowest American cars of the 1980s. There were many outside factors that played a role in influencing the automotive industry during this time (1978-84’ especially). Automakers were focusing on fuel efficiency over anything and as a result, these cars lacked power. I’m talking over 20 seconds to reach 60 for most vehicles on this list. In 2024, the slowest car for sale is the Mitsubishi Mirage coming in at over 12 seconds. During the early ‘80s, 12 seconds to reach 60 was considered decent. As the 80s progressed, the use of turbos and fewer regulations turned the automotive industry around. Before that though, the domestic market suffered a serious drought in performance. Thank you all for tuning in, I really appreciate the support!

Ford LTD LX: The 4-door Mustang You Never Heard Of...
Переглядів 51 тис.День тому
During the last few months of 1984, Ford dropped the Mustang's 5.0 in a boxy family sedan. The LTD was the perfect sedan for it as it shared the same underpinnings as the Mustang hence being on the Fox platform. Many fans of this car and of the platform gave it the name the four-door Mustang, but really it was the LTD LX. The Taurus SHO came out in 1989, 4 years after this beast was on the road...

Top 10 Longest American Cars of the 1970s (land yachts)
Переглядів 282 тис.Місяць тому
In this video, size does matter as I go over the top ten longest American cars from the 1970s. These, as many call them, “land yachts” are absolutely beautiful and will always be. General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler competed against one another in this segment that is no longer around today. Of course, I am no expert, so if I miss anything, please let me know in the comments below. Thank you all...

Chrysler needed to do something after the K-cars were losing popularity due to the competition changing. In 1993 the LH platform was released to the public and it was a hit! The Dodge Intrepid, Eagle Vision, Chrysler LHS, Chrysler New Yorker, and Chrysler Concorde would all share this platform. After a few years, it was time for the LH's second iteration. 1998 would debut this all-new bubbly de...

Coupe utility or utes here in the States aren't around anymore. Every now and again a Subaru Baja will pop up, but that's it. However, from the late '50s, with the introduction of the Ford Ranchero and Chevy El Camino, to the early '80s, utes were fairly popular amongst consumers. With the cancelation of the Ranchero in 1978, there was talk about Ford coming out with another ute. The Ford Duran...

What were the most expensive American cars of the 1970s? Well, you will just have to wait and see. Cadillac, Lincoln, and Chrysler came out with some of the best American cars during this time. The Ford chain driven CVT is actually good. Most of the rest not so much. However, even the bad CVTs can be decent if you actually change the fluid regularly. Most CVTs are designed to have their fluid changed every 60,000 miles or so which of course no one does.

I owned a few 80s cars. The slowest one was a 1980 Pontiac Phoenix. It had the 2.5 L Iron Duke mated to a 3-speed automatic. It had a 0-60 time of 14.7 seconds which wasn't terrible for the era. I do remember that it took an uncomfortably long time to pass another vehicle especially if I was going uphill. Unfortunately, it was an infamous X-Car and had a number of mechanical issues. I do not look back fondly at the Malaise Era.

V6 SN95s are definitely slow, but they generally are pretty damn reliable if you don’t abuse them…I daily a 94 with about 180k miles on it. I have that and a 97 SVT Cobra. They’re night and day in terms of driver experience and power and it’s strange that on the exterior they’re identical.

Spring break 1987 we took my friends Dad's 1985 prestine Oldsmobile Delta 88 Diesel. From Dallas to South Padre TX. 580 miles and drove it all week on South Padre Island with out fill up. We finally filled it up leaving back to Dallas. It was slow but it ran so smooth on the highway it put you to sleep with a soft ride. We are car guys and brought it back few coats of wax and spotless.

By the way: most CVTs are fine. They just need to be maintained. A traditional automatic can go 100-150k miles with no maintenance before dying on you (which is more miles than a typical new-car buyer will put on their vehicle). A CVT needs fluid changes @ 50k miles and every 35k after that. Otherwise they WILL die between 70-100k miles (right after the powertrain warranty expires, lol).

Leaarned to drive a stick chevy LUV while working lawn care.. wish i nad one today.. they were bullets prolf. Also it most be noted that the turbos back then where kinda of an Achilles heel they had a fuel penalty with the diesel and increased the cost of the engin offseting the fuel savings.

Oh wow - my dad had a 1976 Chevy LUV (pronounced LOVE) that I drove in 1982 (my 2 older brothers drove it before me). Just got my license! It was baby blue with gold stripes and front air dam - totally radical - everyone loved that ruck. It was ZERO frills other than neat looks. Manual everything, no A/C, radio with one speaker LOL! But we loved it. So many stories. My little brother learned to drive in it and drove it into the ground. All "newer" cars were slow back then so nobody really cared about 0-60 that I can remember. At least not at 16. You just had something to drive!

The Ford E-350 with the 300 (4.9L) had an estimated 0 to 60 time of around 15 seconds. That's not bad, considering the van weighted around 5,000 lbs, and the power plant was basically a tractor engine. My neighbor had an Oldsmobile with the diesel in it. A very comfortable car to ride in, and the engine wasn't all THAT bad, but you had to keep up on the maintenance. Lastly, driving an 80's, especially the bigger ones, is very nice. Unlike today's car, where everything has to be sporty, and hold a corner at 90 mph, 70's and 80's cars (minus sport and economy cars) were meant to get you from point A to point B as comfortably as you could afford. You meant to take your time and enjoy the ride over the drive, if that makes sense. If you get the chance to drive an 80's Lincoln, Cadillac, or the like, do it. Don't let the size intimidate you. For what they are, they are all right.

I had a family member who worked for the California Highway Patrol in the 1970's-1990's. The 1980's CHP Dodge St Regis patrol car was so weak, it couldn't even get to 80mph going up the Grapevine (Interstate-5 north of Los Angeles.) 😂 Many cars would just walk-away from the St Regis going up the hill. The 1979 CHP Camaro was the first modern "pursuit" patrol car for California, as the bulk of the fleet was so slow due to emissions equipment.

The footage was quite interesting. I saw the Oldsmobiles, Pontiacs and Lincolns. I smiled. The Ford truck was called the Courier. The name of the game during this era was fuel economy. It was fuel economy over performance. That started in the 1970's because of the fuel crisis. Then they downsized in 1977 and 1978 and 1979 at GM, Ford and Chrysler companies. GM downsized again 1985-1987. That was a mistake as we now know. I saw the downsized GM C Bodies too in this video.. Those were some sad lean times. That Chevette was sold globally too. Go look. It was in Brazil. I recall the 350 diesel V8. You covered it quite well. That engine was underpowered and had a bad rep. And GM paid a heavy price for it. The Brougham eventually got better V8s. The Oldsmobile 307 V8 had torque and it was reliable. It was not built for speed. You think about the weight added on the presidential limo too. You once again did your homework and had excellent footage. They started getting the performance and economy right in the late 1980's and 1990's.
